Chocolate Date Spread

Not in fact a butter at all, more of a spread, this simple recipe promises to satisfy your sweet tooth while also being highly nutritious – it’s healthy!! With just 4 ingredients you’ll find yourself saying “no” to sweet alternatives packed with refined sugar.

Makes approx. 250g

250 g pitted dates – preferably all natural i.e no added sulphur.

Water

1 tbsp cocoa

1/3 tsp cinnamon.

Place dates in a saucepan and cover with water. Leave to soak for an hour or so then bring to the boil.

Simmer gently for 8 – 10 minutes. When dates start to turn into mush, add cocoa and stir. Turn heat off and stir in cinnamon.

Blend mixture in a processor then press through a sieve to get rid of any fibrous bits or skin.

Scrape the bottom of the sieve – this glorious dark pulp is perfect as a dip with crusty bread, added to yoghurt or smoothies and used as an ingredient (see my vegan mini eggs for example). Keep refrigerated in an airtight container or jar and eat within two weeks.
